Cory Bergman

Cory Bergman is the general manager of Breaking News, a mobile-first startup within NBC News Digital.  Breaking News boils down the crush of real-time reports in social media to a reliable stream of coverage, available on mobile and social channels.  The team is located in Seattle, New York and London.

Earlier at msnbc.com (now NBCNews.com), he managed the company’s first relationships and strategy with Facebook and Twitter as part of his role as director of new product development (2009-2011).  He helped acquire and relaunch EveryBlock.com as a neighborhood community.  He was also director of business development (2008-2009).

Cory founded the TV industry site Lost Remote back in 1999 — one of the first blogs on the web.  Recognizing the emerging potential of social TV in 2010, he focused the site to exclusively cover the new space.  With social TV exploding in popularity two years later, he sold Lost Remote to Mediabistro.  Cory continues to contribute to the site.

Separately, Cory is the co-founder of Next Door Media, a network of 10 neighborhood news sites in Seattle. The network includes My Ballard, which won a 2009 Online Journalism Award for community collaboration. It also includes PhinneyWood, which won a national Society of Professional Journalists award in 2010 for deadline reporting after Cory covered an overnight arson outbreak, both for the site and on Twitter.

Cory is on the advisory boards of the University of Washington’s Master of Communications in Digital Media program, and he recently completed four years on the advisory board for the Poynter Institute.

Prior to msnbc.com, Cory was the director of digital media at KING-TV in Seattle. While at KING5.com, his team won a variety of national journalism awards, including the Edward R. Murrow for overall excellence in 2007 and the EPpy for best broadcast site in 2008. KING5.com also won the first Emmy Award for a podcast in the country. Cory was named one of Seattle’s “40 Under 40” by the Puget Sound Business Journal.

While at KING TV In 2007, Cory built and launched CitizenRain.com — a site that aggregated posts from over 350 Seattle bloggers in real-time.

Cory worked for NBC News as a staff assignment editor in Los Angeles and later as a freelance field producer, covering stories up and down the West Coast for NBC Nightly News, the TODAY Show and MSNBC TV. In the weeks following the 9/11 attacks, he was a coordinating producer for NBC at Ground Zero, supervising over a dozen crews working off a single satellite truck.

He has an MBA from the University of the Pacific.

Cory also has two young human startups, Kai and Asher, who take the concept of “mobile first” to a frightening new level.
